A bit more about me...
My name is Mattie McMurry. I am a product of Cleveland County Schools. I grew up in Shelby and graduated from Burns High School. I attended UNC-Charlotte where I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education and Children’s Literature with minor in Child Development. I continued my passion for literature and earned my Master's degree from Appalachian State in Library Science. I am also a National Board Certified teacher and was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2016. I've taught fifth grade, first grade and now I'm in Second Grade! This is my eleventh year teaching, and I am very excited about our year together!
My husband is Patrick McMurry, he is an architect here in Shelby. We have been married for 10 years now - boy does time fly! We welcomed our precious little boy, Reese, into the world in March 2018 and we welcomed our second baby at the end of July 2021. What love, what joy, what a ride! Being a working parent is hard, but I LOVE my job. I enjoy getting to know and teach your child! We also have a spunky yet affectionate (and spoiled rotten) little dachshund named Zoey. I'm sure your child will hear lots of stories about her craziness throughout the year! My husband and I also share a love of traveling so we try to go somewhere new each year! When I am not teaching I enjoy reading and cooking. I can spend hours curled with my four-legged fur baby reading book after book, and I love looking up new recipes to try! A few years ago I developed an interest in running. I started coaching the running program at JES and enjoy sharing my passion with young runners.
In the classroom I believe that learning and teaching should be filled with many exciting yet rigorous activities that make learning not only FUN but also enticing. I am determined to create innovative and interactive activities that will engage my students minds! Second grade is the first year your child has a solid foundation that I can build and expand on. It is my desire to provide your child with opportunities to dig deeper into reading, writing and math all while integrating science and social studies. I feel it is necessary to use activities that will enrich and enhance them academically while also building upon their social skills. I have high expectations for my students and with your help I feel confident your child will be successful!
I am looking forward to getting to know you and your second grader this year! I am sure we will all have a great year working and learning together. I plan on having close contact with you this school year through my parent contacts/newsletters, written notes, phone calls, and text messages. Throughout the school year, please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions, comments, and/or concerns. You may reach me by contacting the school (704) 476.8390, emailing me at [email protected] , sending me a message through Dojo, or simply putting a note in your child's folder.
